Communications: Dialing Guide
Basic Calling Information
Area Codes and Local Numbers
- The DAC and area code are incorporated into all local landline numbers in Italy. All landline numbers begin with "0." The following one to three digits is always the geographic area code.
- The initial "0" and the area code are always dialed, whether from within Italy or from overseas.
- Local numbers are up to 11 digits in length.
Mobile Phones
- Mobile phone numbers in Italy contain ten digits. The first digit is always "3" and is part of a three- to five-digit prefix that indicates the cellular/mobile carrier of the destination mobile phone number.
- When calling a mobile phone from within Italy, there is no DAC; simply dial the subscriber number regardless of the origin or destination of the call.
Special Numbers and Services
- Toll-free numbers start with the prefix "800."
- Premium numbers start with the prefix "116" or "900."
- Dial "9" to access an outside line when calling from within an office or other type of self-contained (PBX) telephone system.
- Optional carrier codes are available to designate which long-distance carrier will handle your call.
Tones
- Ring tone: Equal tones, separated by long pauses
- Busy tone: Short equal on and off tones
