National Symbols: National Day
Anniversary of the Republic/Republic Day
Date
June 2
Background
After World War II, Italy’s King Victor Emmanuel III was widely unpopular because he had permitted the oppressive dictatorship of Benito Mussolini. In a national referendum in 1946, citizens voted to abolish the monarchy and establish the Republic of Italy. June 2, the date the Republic was established, is Italy’s National Day.
Description
Also called National Day, this holiday commemorates the establishment of the Italian Republic. Italians celebrate Republic Day with parades, concerts, fireworks, and flag waving. At the official military parade in Rome, planes fly over emitting red, white and green smoke to represent the Italian flag.
